AJ Auxerre vs. FC Sochaux-Montbéliard
Having gone five matches without conceding a goal, Auxerre will have been disappointed to have slipped to a loss against Bordeaux last weekend before a somewhat embarrassing 2-0 defeat against Vannes in the Coupe de la Ligue on Tuesday evening. Admittedly, the Burgundy club were a number of players down due to injury and can expect to be again on Saturday.
Captain Benoit Pedretti will be their greatest loss but Ireneusz Jelen, Jérémy Berthod and Robert Popov will also be missing. The likelihood is that Julien Quercia will be absent because of a thigh problem.
Sochaux, who won their first league match of the season last weekend, also lost to Ligue 2 opposition in midweek. Les Lionceaux were edged out 1-0 by Lens after extra-time but deserved better. A lengthy injury list has not shortened any since last weekend, although Mevlut Erding could return. Stéphane Dalmat is banned.
Le Havre AC vs. Paris Saint-Germain
It has been an excellent week for Le Havre. After securing an important win over Caen in the Normandy derby last weekend, Le Havre built on their success by becoming the first French team since August to beat Rennes, winning in the Coupe de la Ligue last weekend.
Yannick Boli, who is on loan from PSG, missed the midweek win over Rennes due to injury and is doubtful to face his parent club on Saturday evening. Nikola Nikezic is expected to be the only other casualty for HAC.
Les Parisiens, who were also triumphant in the Coupe de la Ligue on Wednesday evening, travel north without long-term injury problem Loris Arnaud, while Paul Le Guen will sweat on the fitness of Mateja Kezman and Ceara. Both look unlikely to play.
Le Mans UC vs. Valenciennes FC
Antoine Kombouaré, head coach of Valenciennes, could be entering the last chance saloon in Le Mans on Saturday evening as the pressure on his job intensifies. It has been eleven matches since VA last claimed a victory while they have not even mustered a goal in three.
When Johan Audel was introduced from the bench in last weekend’s 1-0 loss in Nancy after a spell out due to injury, the youngster introduced some real spark to the attack and will likely be asked to play from the start in Le Mans. Siaka Tiéné and Rudy Mater are the only two players definitely missing for the northern club – both are banned.
Le Mans, who have lost their last two, will give late fitness tests to star man Mathieu Coutadeur as well as Norwegian midfielder Frederik Stromstad. Grégory Cerdan is banned while Saber Ben Frej is injured.
Olympique Marseille vs. FC Lorient
Marseille know that to keep the pressure firmly applied to Lyon and Bordeaux at the top of the table, they must win matches such as Saturday’s fixture at the Stade Vélodrome against Lorient.
Eric Gerets’ side will be without a number of squad defenders such as Zubar, Civelli and Mears due to injury, while El-Amine Erbate’s status in the squad is uncertain due to family issues. Mamadou Samassa sits out while Baki Koné is a doubt due to injury.
These problems pale into insignificance when Lorient’s situation is considered. Although second-choice goalkeeper Lionel Cappone returns from an injury to keep goal, les Merlus face Ligue 1’s most potent attack without several first choice players. Audard, Jouffre, Saifi and Jallet would all be expected to start in normal circumstances but are sidelined. Hamed Namouchi will miss the next month due to injury.
AS Nancy-Lorraine vs. SM Caen
Strong league form was not enough to inspire Nancy to a similar performance in the Coupe de la Ligue as they slumped to a 2-0 loss against PSG. Head coach Pablo Correa was incensed by the performance of his side and launched a stinging attack on his fringe players in the press the following day.
Key man Youssouf Hadji will be recalled to the squad having been rested in midweek but Abbes Ouaddou will be missing until the winter break due to injury. He joins fellow defenders Michael Chretien, Joel Sami and Geoffrey Adjet on the sidelines. Strikers Gaston Curbelo and Basile Camerling are also making their way back from injuries.
Arguably, Caen will be hampered by injured to a greater extent. First team regulars Anthony Deroin, Juan Eluchans, Grégory Leca, Fahid Ben Kalhfallah and Jérémy Sorbon will all be missing from Franck Dumas’ squad to play at the Stade Marcel Pichot.
Toulouse FC vs. Grenoble Foot38
Times are starting to become tough for Alain Casanova’s Toulouse side after scaling the heights of Le Championnat to as high a point as second. One win in five has seen the men from the Pink City slip down the rankings to sixth spot – still well above pre-season expectations.
The midfield Étienne duo, Didot and Cappoue, will return to the squad after suspension while there is also good news on the injury front as Moussa Sissoko and Daniel Braaten both returned to training this weekend, leaving Blondel as their only injury concern.
Mehmet Bazdarevic’s Grenoble squad have been the overachievers of the Ligue 1 season to date but draws have stalled their progress of late – three in their last five fixtures. Laurent Courtois and Milos Dimitrijevic are both banned while Paul Cattier and Jimmy Mainfroi are injured.
Lille OSC vs. AS Saint-Étienne
Saturday night marks the dawn of a new era at Saint-Étienne as new head coach Alain Perrin and director of football Damien Commoli team-up for the first time when les Verts play Lille.
Unfortunately for Sainté, there is still a lengthy list of injury problems for the new management team to cope with. The defence is particularly troubled by selection problems. Loic Perrin and Mahamadou Dabo are both still injured while Yohan Benalouane is suspended along with Bayal Sall. Les Verts will have a full complement of strikers but will have to do without midfielders Christophe Landrin and, probably, Geoffrey Dernis.
Lille’s position is very different as Grégory Tafforeau, Tulio de Melo and Franck Béria should all return to the fold, leaving head coach Rudy Garcia with a full complement of players. Though LOSC under-performed against PSG last Sunday night, losing 1-0, great changes seem unlikely.
OGC Nice vs. FC Nantes
There were no risks taken by Nice head coach Frédéric Antonetti in midweek when his side faced third tier Créteil in the Coupe de la Ligue. Although the minnows worried their more illustrious opponents at times, les Aiglons would soar through the match 3-0. Playing on Sunday, Nice should have had sufficient time to recover so that fatigue is not an issue.
Three players are expected to be missing for the Mediterranean club, with Loic Rémy the main absentee. Also injured are Kafoumba Coulibaly and Mahamane Traoré.
Elie Baup, head coach of Nantes, has had plenty of injury headaches in recent times but his squad is getting back towards full fitness. Daniel Abdoun will not be fit to play on Sunday but there is hope that Ibrahim Tall and Kévin Das Neves will both return. De Freitas is a further doubt while Nantes will miss Christian Bekamenga and Ivan Klasnic due to bans.
Stade Rennais vs. AS Monaco
Guy Lacombe may have watched his side lose their lengthy unbeaten domestic run in Le Havre on Wednesday evening but it will not be viewed as a great disaster by the Breton coach. Rennes played a solid match but missed too many chances and were punished when they conceded a penalty three minutes into stoppage time.
With Jimmy Briand back from suspension, as well as right-back Rod Fanni, such problems in front of goal should not be so apparent. Thomert and Danzé are both doubts while the usual trio of Esteban, Luzi and Marveaux are all missing.
Monaco’s injury list is also sizeable, with youngster Yannick Sagbo, who made his debut against Lyon last weekend, missing until next year. He joins a lengthy injury list that has not shortened any since last weekend.
Once again Monaco head coach Ricardo will call upon his young players in an important fixture, with Alexandre Licata and Yohan Mollo particular impressive in recent weeks.
Olympique Lyon vs. Girondins de Bordeaux
Undoubtedly the fixture of the weekend will be played at the Stade Gerland on Sunday evening as last season’s top two clubs tussle for early season supremacy. Lyon may have made the slightly sharper start in the league but a Bordeaux win would bring Laurent Blanc’s side right back into contention.
Les Gones, who won this match-up last season to take a major step towards a seventh consecutive league title, were shocked by Ligue 2 side Metz in midweek (pictured) but will recall all their big guns for this fixture. If there is a weakness in the Lyon side, it remains in a defence that is shorn of John Mensah, Mathieu Bodmer and François Clerc. Fabio Santos and Miralem Pjanic will also be missing.
Blanc also has selection problems, though. First choice goalkeeper Ulrich Ramé is missing but second choice, Mathieu Valverde, who was taken to hospital last weekend after being accidentally kicked in the head by Auxerre’s Dennis Oliech, should be fit to play. Ducasse is definitely missing while Mathieu Chalmé, Jussie and Gabriel Obertan are uncertain to feature. Left-back Franck Jurietti may not feature after going AWOL earlier this week.
